Intro to Paleontology

Description

Fossils record the history of life, and some can be found by anyone willing to look carefully. These fourteen PDF lessons start with what fossils are and how they form, then cover the tools a fossil hunter needs.

You then learn how to read rocks to find fossil-bearing areas, the basics of identification, and how fossils are dated using geological time. Later lessons cover major extinction events, dinosaurs beyond the Hollywood myths, ancient oceans, and mammals and megafauna. The final lessons deal with ethics and responsible collecting, building a collection, local resources and digital tools. After reading, you can plan a first fossil hunt.

Who it is for: beginners curious about fossils and Earth history who want to start a collecting hobby.
