Expressive portraits capture mood as well as likeness. This course starts with the foundations of expressive portraiture and then covers facial anatomy and proportions.

The lessons that follow deal with using light and shadow for emotional effect, colour theory for portraits, and capturing emotion through the features of the face. You then study brushwork for dynamic results, composition and focal points, and developing a style of your own. The final lessons move from reference material to an original character and a complete portrait. Most of the ten PDF lessons include exercises for working at an easel or on paper.
