Character Design Basics

Description

Every memorable character starts with a few deliberate choices about shape, silhouette and color. These seven PDF lessons begin with character design fundamentals, then explain shape language and what different shapes suggest about personality.

You also read basic anatomy for character artists, how silhouettes create personality, and how color theory supports expression. A lesson on developing your character’s backstory leads into the final lesson, where you bring everything together in your first character. Exercises and a checklist in the PDFs give you drawing tasks for each stage, using whatever materials you already have.

Who it is for: beginners in illustration, animation or games who want to design characters with a clear purpose.
