Pottery Wheel Basics

Description

Throwing on a wheel depends on a series of small skills, and each one builds on the one before. These seven PDF lessons begin with pottery wheel equipment and clay preparation, including wedging techniques.

You then read about centering clay, the most difficult early skill, before throwing your first cylinder and shaping simple bowls. The final lessons cover trimming and finishing and an introduction to glazing. Exercises and tables in the PDFs describe each stage and common faults. Reading cannot replace hands-on practice, so the lessons work best with access to a wheel and clay.

Who it is for: beginners who want to learn the basic steps of making pottery on a wheel.
